9. Understanding Melioidosis

Djiniyini Gondarra and Richard Trudgen discuss the basics of Melioidosis, as there are often outbreaks in the wet season in the NT, with up to 10 Yolngu people across the Arnhem Land region dying from the disease every year.

They discuss the location of the bacteria and that they multiply quickly. They also talk about how Yolngu with an immune deficiency of any kind (diabetes, renal disease, lung disease or hazardous alcohol use) are at higher risk of getting it. Prevention and the availability of medication is also discussed.

This podcast is in Yolngu Matha.

Produced by Aboriginal Resource and Development Services (ARDS) in 2002.
